Chapter Seven

Tuesday, December 26th.

Sixth Day of Yule.

Franklin Street. Austin.

Angelique’s dark eyes blinked in disbelief when she saw Misty carrying a baby into the kitchen. “Whose child is dat, Mystere? Are you keeping a secret from me?”

Misty smiled at her long-time assistant. “Noel is a Yule gift given to our family by the Fates. Forest found her at the tree farm waiting for us under a spruce tree.”

“Amazing,” said Angelique. A witch from the bayou and a healer in her own right, Angelique accepted everything Misty, her mentor, said without question. “A sister for Forest. How wonderful. A gift from the Goddess.”

Rowanne was happy to see her neighbor, Angelique, from the bayou west of Houma. They pitched in with Carmelita and the three of them made a special breakfast for everyone.

Spicy Cajun omelets with sausage, tomatoes and bell peppers. Homemade biscuits from the oven. Delicious.

“Dis da best breakfast me and Felix ever had,” said Clovis. “Our mama couldn’t cook nothing widout burning it black as a snake.”

Felix nodded his head. “Worst cook in da bayou, dat’s what Daddy said. Daddy beat Mama senseless and dat didn’t do no good. She don’t learn nothing. Still couldn’t cook.”

“Everybody in da bayou hear dem stories about your mean and testy mama,” said Angelique. “Y’all are better off on your own.”
